Favorite Way: Studying the Consolidated Word List.
Roots: "Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of Prefixes, Suffixes, and Combining Forms". I've heard the list in the "Spelling Rules Book" from Hexco is more complete, though.
Lists: Spellit!, 2004 Consolidated Word List, Paideia, and I've heard "New Nat's Notes" from Hexco is good, though I never used it.
Flash Cards: Nope.
Techniques: Reading the words over and over and over.
Advice to other spellers: Figure out the right stuff to study, and if you want to do well, study a lot. Learn language patterns, Greek and Latin roots, and spelling rules.
